Thirteen New Shows Added to 2012-2013 Season Just Before September Kickoff

THIRTEEN NEW SHOWS ADDED TO 2012-2013 SEASON JUST BEFORE SEPTEMBER KICKOFF 
NORTH BETHESDA, MD – Strathmore today announced the addition of 13 concerts in the Music Center and Mansion. The arts center enhances its 2012-13 season with the excitement of the distinctly American drumline, poignancy of a culture-bridging Middle Eastern pop star and a rising operatic singer whose clarity is quickly garnering international acclaim, as well as a bevy of talented local musicians.
Tickets for all concerts are on sale now to Strathmore Stars, the art center’s philanthropic program that supports arts programming, education programs and community outreach projects. Tickets will be available to the general public beginning this Friday, August 3, 2011 at 10 a.m.

New singing sensation Nathan Pacheco is an American singer/songwriter with Brazilian roots, a Yanni connection and the Disney seal of approval. The Virginia-born Pacheco’s rich operatic voice first gained fame as part of the Yanni Voices project and recently wrapped his first album in London. He’ll share selections from his debut release on Walt Disney Records, Introducing Nathan Pacheco, at Strathmore.

In Israel, Rita Yahan-Farouz is so well-known she goes by one name: Rita. The Iranian-born pop singer and actress is regarded as one of the most famous female singers in Israel, and as a cultural ambassador helping to connect Israelis and Iranians. She became an underground sensation in Iran after the release of various pop recordings performed in her native Persian language; at Strathmore she performs the inspiring, hopeful music that’s made her an icon in the Middle East, including selections from her new 2012 release, My Joys.

Last year’s Abbey Road presentation was a resounding success, and now Pink Floyd’s 1973 masterpiece gets the Classic Albums Live treatment. Dark Side of the Moon, with hits like “Money,” “Wish You Were Here” and “Us and Them,” was on the Billboard charts longer than any other album in history; now top musicians recreate the epic disc live onstage in track order.
 
DRUMLINE LIVE!Friday, March 1, 20138 p.m.Tickets $28-$58
Bold beats and history come together in a musical celebration of the Historically Black College and University marching band tradition. Produced with consultants from the hit 2002 movie, Drumline, the group performance will feature original compositions, soulful favorites from the R&B catalogue and intricate choreography provided by the “auxiliary,” dancers who interpret the music visually with high energy dancing and stepping. “Drumline Live dazzles with explosive choreography and thrilling spectacle” (Showbiz Chicago).

He’s known as a co-founder of Unified Jazz Ensemble—now sax man Jeff Antoniuk brings his forward-thinking band The Jazz Update to the Mansion. Antoniuk uses his background in jazz performance and West African ethnomusicology to expand the genre, and has performed alongside such icons as Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Bobby McFerrin and Freddie Hubbard.

Singer-songwriter Eric Scott and his band combine the storyteller’s art and the rock-and-roller’s drive. The D.C. native has a background in R&B that has lead him to perform with artists such as James Brown, B.B. King, Ray Charles, Kansas, The Neville Brothers, Jimmy Buffett and Keb' Mo'. During his history as a sideman, songwriter and session musician, Scott has also released three records. The Washington Post called his sophomore album, featured on the WB television show Felicity, “Whip smart...hard to resist...clearly the work of a pop artist talented and resourceful enough to stand on his own.”

Worlds collide when contemporary jazz meets the rhythmic melodies of Africa. Loide’s African roots and her deep love for jazz come together to create a mix of contemporary vocals and warm afro-lusophone rhythms reflective of her own eclectic roots.

Hindustani (North Indian) classical vocalist Samia Ahmad branches out from her classical base to incorporate Nazrul Sangeet, Bhajans and global fusion, melding the Hindustani classical sounds with the rhythms of South Africa and the West.

The art of songwriting and the raw, roots beauty of Americana music come together in the rocking trio of Kevin Dudley, Ralph Gordon and Ricki Simpkins. Headed by Dudley, former front man/guitarist with the Atomic Hillbillies, the group sites Texas hill country, chrome diners, old motorcycles and Guy Clark among its influences.

Named after the street where many of its members live and play, the 18th Street Singers take Strathmore up a few blocks to 34th Street with a Christmas concert that brings over 50 members of this eclectic, D.C.-based choral group together to sing festive favorites of the season.
